The 7 times table
The 7 times table is usually the hardest one to learn: it has none of the shortcuts of the 5s or the 9s. Here is the full chart, four tricks that help you remember it, and a game to practice without noticing.
The full 7 times table
| 7 × 1 | 7 |
| 7 × 2 | 14 |
| 7 × 3 | 21 |
| 7 × 4 | 28 |
| 7 × 5 | 35 |
| 7 × 6 | 42 |
| 7 × 7 | 49 |
| 7 × 8 | 56 |
| 7 × 9 | 63 |
| 7 × 10 | 70 |
Tricks to remember it
- 5, 6, 7, 8: 56 = 7 × 8. The four digits come in order.
- Five plus two: 7 × n is the same as 5 × n plus 2 × n. For example, 7 × 8 = 40 + 16 = 56, and 7 × 6 = 30 + 12 = 42.
- Count back from 70: 7 × 10 = 70 is easy. Then 7 × 9 = 70 − 7 = 63, and 7 × 8 = 63 − 7 = 56.
- The last digit goes down by 3: the answers end in 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0. Each digit shows up exactly once, and each one is the previous minus 3 (or plus 7).
The ones that trip people up most are 7 × 7 = 49, 7 × 8 = 56 and 7 × 9 = 63. Practice those three first.
Practice with Cafufa
In Cafufa, numbers show up one after another, faster and faster. You hit CAFUFA on every multiple of 7 (7, 14, 21, 28...) and also on numbers ending in 7 (17, 27, 37...). Miss one or tap on the wrong number and you're out.
There's no time to work it out: when 49 and 56 show up, either you know them or you fall. That's why it works as practice. If you can reach 100 without a mistake, you know the 7 times table by heart.
